Getting Started
How do I scan a receipt?
Open ReceiptSplit and tap the large "Scan Receipt" button on the home screen. Point your camera at the receipt and hold steady. The app will automatically detect and capture the receipt.
Tips for best results:
- Ensure good lighting (avoid shadows)
- Hold the phone steady and parallel to the receipt
- Include all items and the total in the frame
- Smooth out wrinkles if possible
Can I add receipts manually without scanning?
Yes! If scanning isn't working or you prefer manual entry, tap the "+" button and select "Manual Entry." You can add items one by one, set the total, and add participants just like a scanned receipt.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required. ReceiptSplit works entirely on your device. Your data stays private and never leaves your phone unless you choose to share it.
Splitting & Payments
How do I assign items to people?
After scanning a receipt:
- Tap "Add Participants" to add people to split with
- Select a person at the top of the screen
- Tap items to assign them to that person
- Items can be shared by multiple people (just tap again)
The app automatically calculates each person's share including their portion of tax and tip.
What's "Split Evenly"?
The "Split Evenly" button divides the total equally among all participants. Use this when everyone shared everything or when you don't want to track individual items.
How do I send payment requests?
After assigning items, tap "Share" and select a participant. You can send their share via:
- Text/iMessage - Pre-filled message with amount
- Email - Detailed breakdown of items
- Venmo/PayPal - Message includes a payment link with amount
- Share Sheet - Any app you prefer
How do I track who has paid me back?
Use the Balance Dashboard (tap the balance icon in the top right). Here you can see:
- Who owes you money and how much
- Your debts to others
- Settlement suggestions to simplify debts
Mark payments as received by tapping on a person and recording the payment.
Troubleshooting
The receipt scan didn't work correctly
If the AI misread some items, you can easily edit them:
- Tap any item to edit its name or price
- Swipe left on an item to delete it
- Tap "+ Add Item" to add missing items
Tips for better scans: Use good lighting, avoid reflections, and try flattening crumpled receipts.
The app says I'm offline
ReceiptSplit's AI-powered receipt scanning requires an internet connection. When offline, you'll see a "Limited features available" message.
While offline, you can still:
- View previously scanned receipts
- Edit existing splits
- Use manual entry to add items
For best results with receipt scanning, connect to WiFi or mobile data.
How do I delete a receipt?
Swipe left on any receipt in your history and tap "Delete." This removes the receipt and all associated splits from your device.
Privacy & Data
Where is my data stored?
All your data is stored locally on your device. ReceiptSplit does not have servers that store your receipts or personal information.
When you scan a receipt, the image is processed temporarily to extract text, then discarded. Only the extracted text and your split calculations are saved locally.
Can I export my data?
You can share individual receipt summaries via the Share button. Full data export is planned for a future update.
How do I delete all my data?
Go to Settings > Delete All Data. This permanently removes all receipts, participants, and payment history from your device. This action cannot be undone.
Alternatively, deleting the app removes all data.

How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through Apple:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Find ReceiptSplit and tap Cancel
You'll continue to have Pro access until the end of your billing period.
